Is It Better To Do Many ʿUmrahs Or Increase Tawāf?

Question:

 

I have a question regarding performing multiple ‘umrahs in one trip of for example 10 days. I have heard multiple times that it is more afdal to do only one ‘umrah, and do as much nawafil tawaaf as possible. What is the sahih position?

 

 

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

Answer:

 

Umrah and tawaf is such an ibadah where a person doesn’t perform it regularly as it require to be in a specific place. Hence when one is blessed with the opportunity to be in the haram, then he should take maximum benefit of the place.

 

When it comes to which is more virtuous, then there can be few points to keep in mind before mentioning the position.

 

  • The greater the sacrifice a person will do, the greater the reward will be. Thus if a person can go on to put a new ihram and perform another Umrah, it will be well and good as long as he doesn’t miss the congregational salah in the haram as this will be better.

 

  • When it comes to salah in the haram. It would be even greater than performing extra tawaf. The salah performed in the haram are multiplied more than 100 000.

 

However preference if given on performing more tawaf than performing more umrah. Therefore it will be better do perform more tawaf rather than making multiple umrahs.

عَنْ جَابِرٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ قَالَ ‏ “‏ صَلاَةٌ فِي مَسْجِدِي أَفْضَلُ مِنْ أَلْفِ صَلاَةٍ فِيمَا سِوَاهُ. إِلاَّ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ. وَصَلاَةٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ مِائَةِ أَلْفِ صَلاَةٍ فِيمَا سِوَاهُ ‏”‏

 

Sunan Ibn Majah hadith 1406

 

قُلْت: لَكِنْ يُخَالِفُهُ مَا فِي الْوَلْوَالِجيَّةِ وَنَصُّهُ الصَّلَاةُ بِمَكَّةَ أَفْضَلُ لِأَهْلِهَا مِنْ الطَّوَافِ وَلِلْغُرَبَاءِ الطَّوَافُ أَفْضَلُ لِأَنَّ الصَّلَاةَ فِي نَفْسِهَا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ الطَّوَافِ لِأَنَّ النَّبِيَّ – صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – شَبَّهَ الطَّوَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ بِالصَّلَاةِ لَكِنَّ الْغُرَبَاءَ لَوْ اشْتَغَلُوا بِهَا لَفَاتَهُمْ الطَّوَافُ مِنْ غَيْرِ إمْكَانِ التَّدَارُكِ فَكَانَ الِاشْتِغَالُ بِمَا لَا يُمْكِنُ تَدَارُكُهُ أَوْلَى. اهـ.

 

مَطْلَبٌ الصَّلَاةُ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ الطَّوَافِ وَهُوَ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ الْعُمْرَةِ [تَنْبِيهٌ]

 

فِي شَرْحِ الْمُرْشِدِيِّ عَلَى الْكَنْزِ قَوْلُهُمْ إنَّ الصَّلَاةَ أَفْضَلُ مِنْ الطَّوَافِ لَيْسَ مُرَادُهُمْ بِهِ أَنَّ صَلَاةَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مَثَلًا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ أَدَاءِ أُسْبُوعٍ لِأَنَّ الْأُسْبُوعَ مُشْتَمِلٌ عَلَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ مَعَ زِيَادَةٍ بَلْ مُرَادُهُمْ بِهِ أَنَّ الزَّمَنَ الَّذِي يُؤَدِّي فِيهِ أُسْبُوعًا هَلْ الْأَفْضَلُ فِيهِ أَنْ يَصْرِفَهُ لِلطَّوَافِ أَمْ يَشْغَلُهُ بِالصَّلَاةِ اهـ وَنَظِيرُهُ مَا أَجَابَ بِهِ الْعَلَّامَةُ الْقَاضِي إبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ ظَهِيرَةَ الْمَكِّيُّ حَيْثُ سُئِلَ هَلْ الْأَفْضَلُ الطَّوَافُ أَوْ الْعُمْرَةُ مِنْ أَنَّ الْأَرْجَحَ تَفْضِيلُ الطَّوَافِ عَلَى الْعُمْرَةِ إذَا شَغَلَ بِهِ مِقْدَارَ زَمَنِ الْعُمْرَةِ إلَّا إذَا قِيلَ إنَّهَا لَا تَقَعُ إلَّا فَرْضَ كِفَايَةٍ فَلَا يَكُونُ الْحُكْمُ كَذَلِكَ
