Answer:
Wa’alaykumussalaam,
It is not permissible to sell or serve alcohol. It is impossible to determine how much of a waiter’s income would be tainted by this portion of their work, but one should consider the following hadith:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed ten involved in wine: The one who presses it, the one who has it pressed, its drinker, its carrier, and the one it is carried to, its server, its seller, the consumption of its price, the one who purchases it and the one it was purchased for.”
Firstly, one should investigate whether it is possible to work out an arrangement or a position where one could avoid being involved in alcohol transactions specifically. If that is not possible, it is necessary to strive to find a job elsewhere or an alternative line of work. If no other job which suits the work permit conditions can be found, one should honestly consider whether it is truly necessary for them to acquire a work permit at all.
Allah (عز و جل) says: “…And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out. {2} And [He] will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already 1 set for everything a [decreed] extent. 2 {3}” [65:2-3]
