Question:

I joined an Islamic seminar the other day I learnt that if you suppress the urge to release gas it is makruh tahrimi and it is wajib for Salah to be repeated if the Salah time hasn’t ended. Is this correct?

What if the urge isn’t so strong that it won’t distract you from completing the salah, would this be the same ruling to break salah everytime you have a “feeling”.  I try to keep my wudhu and sometimes do suppress it because I know this feeling will come several times, but even whilst suppressing it I can concentrate on my Salah.

I have an issue where sometimes I get the feeling I have release gas and this could be before, during and after the prayer. There’s been times I have to do wudhu several times but because I’ve merely got the feeling I want to release gas. Is it okay for me to complete my Salah if I know I don’t have to release the gas immediately. Since learning about the ruling that it is wajib to repeat the prayer I have become confused as I don’t know if I will get the urge to release gas again in prayer even after renewing wudhu but I know I can keep it in and I’m not that desperate. Please advise or let me know if you need me information.

So my question is can I perform my Salah without releasing the gas everytime I have a feeling something is there  and is it ok for me to continue if I know I can complete my Salah.

Are my prayers valid even if I’m suppressing gas/urine (which is makruh tahrimi)  and nothing is released or is it wajib for my prayers to be repeated if there is still time. Please confirm the ruling

Abu Umamah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade a man to perform prayer whilst he was suppressing the urge to urinate or defecate. – [سنن ابن ماجه، رقم الحديث: ٦١٧]

Whilst in the state of wudhu, if there is a strong urge to pass wind or urinate when intending to pray salah, one should firstly relieve themselves and perform wudhu afresh when there is ample time to do so and the salah timing will not elapse.[1]

In the Hanafi madhhab it is considered disliked to suppress the need to relieve oneself or pass wind whilst in prayer. However, it will not be wajib to repeat the prayer under this circumstance. It would only become necessary to do so if one was to release gas or urine drops were to exit one’s private.[2]

Because the urge you get isn’t so strong and it does not distract you from performing the prayer properly with focus, there is no need to break your salah due to such ‘feelings’.

Going forward, these feelings should be disregarded, unless they reach a degree whereby concentration in salah is difficult and the obligations of prayer are omitted [as a result].[3]
