Question:
Can a person pray on a chair first saf directly behind imam?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In Hanafi Fiqh, the first row (Saff) in a congregational prayer is considered the most important and should ideally be filled by those who can stand and pray in the normal way. However, if a person cannot stand due to illness, injury, or another valid reason, they are allowed to pray while sitting on a chair.
It is not preferred for someone who is sitting due to illness to be in the first row. The first row should be for who are able to stand.
It is better for someone sitting to pray in the last row, as this helps maintain the proper arrangement of rows in the congregation.
However, it is still permissible for the person to pray in the first row if there is no one else to fill that space. But ideally, they should be in the back rows.
While it’s allowed for a person to pray on a chair, it’s better for them to be in a row behind the first, not directly behind the Imam in the first row, unless necessary.
