Question:

 

When working out Zakaat on Gold Jewellery, am I correct that you would give Zakaat on the value you would receive for that jewellery, which is a lot lower than the actual price of Gold.

 

 

For example, you have 20 tolas (200grams) which would be approximately £14,420 according to the Gold spot price of £72.10.

 

 

However, if you went to the market to sell this same Jewellery in an Asian Jeweller or Pawn Shop, etc, you would get nowhere near that price.

Answer:

 

When calculating Zakaat on gold jewellery, you should base it on the current market value of the gold, not the retail price or the original purchase price.

 

If you were to sell the jewellery to jewellers or pawn shops, they typically offer a lower price than the spot price due to workmanship deductions and resale margins. If you were to sell the gold to someone else, you would expect to receive the actual market value of the gold, so that is the price you need to consider when calculating the zakaat.

(نِصَابُ الذَّهَبِ عِشْرُونَ مِثْقَالًا وَالْفِضَّةِ مِائَتَا دِرْهَمٍ كُلُّ عَشْرَةِ) دَرَاهِمَ (وَزْنُ سَبْعَةِ مَثَاقِيلَ)

مِنْ آخَرَ وَأَدَّى الزَّكَاةَ إنْ كَانَ أَكْبَرُ رَأْيِهِ أَنَّهُ يَقْدِرُ عَلَى قَضَائِهِ

وَالْمِثْقَالُ لُغَةً: مَا يُوزَنُ بِهِ قَلِيلًا كَانَ أَوْ كَثِيرًا. وَعُرْفًا مَا يَأْتِي ط (قَوْلُهُ: كُلُّ عَشَرَةِ دَرَاهِمَ وَزْنُ سَبْعَةِ مَثَاقِيلَ) اعْلَمْ أَنَّ الدَّرَاهِمَ كَانَتْ فِي عَهْدِ عُمَرَ – رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ – مُخْتَلِفَةً

ليس فيما دون عشرين مثفالا من الذهب صدقة فإذا كانت عشرين مثقالا وحال عليها الحول ففيها نصف مثقال ثم في كل أربعة مثاقيل قيراطان وليس فيما دون أربعة مثاقيل صدقة عند أبي حنيفة
