Hasad and greed

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said “Jealousy devours good deeds like fire devours wood.”  (Sunan Ibn Majah p.310 v.2)

Saaiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said “There is no desirable form of jealousy except for two types: a person to whom Allah has given the Quran ad he recites it day and night, so when a person hears him he says, “If only I were given the likes of what he has been given so that I may act upon it the way this person is.”  And a person to whom Allah has bestowed wealth and he spends it in the cause of Truth, so a person says “If only I were given the likes of what he has been given, so that I may act upon it the way this person is.”   (Sahih Bukhari p.17 v.1)

There are three types of hasad:

  1. When a person wants the blessings to be taken away from his Muslim brother even if it does not come to him, rather he does not like Allah (SWA) blessing this nimah on anyone.
  2. Where he wants the blessing to be taken away from someone else because he wants it.
  3. Where he wishes for himself a blessing like that which another has without it having to be taken away from the other person.  This type is permissible and is called ghibtah. (Fathul Bari p.210 v.1)
