Question:

I was recently given 2 Gold necklaces by my Mum. This was given to me for Eid (Sept 2011). I am Only 15 Years Old and am still Schooling and do not work and have no income. Do I need to pay Zakat? If so, how do I calculate? What is the Threshold (Weight) etc. If I am required to pay what do I do about money.

 Answer:

Bismillah

Zakat is compulsory upon a person who possesses the quantum of nisab which is 612.35 grams of silver or 87.47 grams of gold. (Raddul Muhtar p.5 v.2)

Regarding your situation, if the two gold necklaces amount to 87.48 grams of gold, then you will be required to give zakat next year in the month of Shawal. You do not have to give zakat now. (Aapke Masaail p.368 v.3)

Next year when you do come to pay your zakat and you do not have any money then either your parents with your consent can pay the Zakat on your behalf. (Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p.121 v.6) Or the second option is that you will have to sell some of the jewelleries to pay your zakat.
