Question:
I have one question regarding a masalah, a worker in a hotel who's work is to wash utensil used in the hotel and some of the utensils are used to serve alcohol. What is the status of his income. How about if the utensil is used to serve pork.
Answer:
The status of the income attained here is that it is haram. It is not permissible for the brother in question to benefit from it nor use it to gift.
Alcohol and pork are forbidden in Islam.
The prohibition of which is proven in the Qur’aan as Allah the Almighty states,
'Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience.' (Surah al-Maidah, Verse 3)
'O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah ], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.' (Surah al-Maidah, Verse 90)
Therefore working in such places be it merely washing the utensils is haram too as you are aiding others in sin which is a sin in itself as Allah the Almighty states in the holy Qur'aan,
'…Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.' (Surah al-Maidah, Verse 2)
Lastly, I advise that you look for another job which is more suitable with the laws of the Shariah. however, in the meantime you can work there until you find a lawful job.
