Question:

My husband is away for work. We want to know, if we get sexual desires/arousals, do we have to perform ghusl or can we continue our namaz?

Answer:

Bismillah

Besides urine three liquids can also come out of one’s private parts.

1. Madhi (pre-coital fluid), is a thin clear liquid which is discharged at the time of arousal without ejaculation. This necessitates wudu on emission.

2. Mani (Sperm) is a white thick fluid which is discharged at the time of ejaculation. This necessitates a ghusl on emission.

3. Wadi is a white cloudy thick fluid which has no smell and is discharged either before or after urinating. This necessitates wudu on emission.
(HashiatTahtawi p.100)

Madhi is impure, therefore, one will be required to wash that area where the madhi is with water to make it pure.
(DarsTirmizi p.346 v.1)

With regards to your question, if either of you are sexually aroused and discharge madhi then wudhu will be necessary. If mani is discharged, ghusl will be necessary.

Note that the wetness a woman experiences at the time of arousal would be considered Madhi. If a woman climaxes it is considered as Mani. The aforementioned rulings will apply.

It is worth noting that one is not allowed to intentionally arouse him/her self through masturbation.
Allah states in the Quran, “…who guard their private parts except with their spouses or those who are legally in their possession, for in that case they shall not be blamed. However those who seek to go beyond that in lust are the ones who shall be the transgressors”
(Surah Muminun: V5-7)

Most jurists have included masturbation in the prohibition and have included this in the category of those who go beyond what is permissible in satisfying ones lust.
(TafseerQurtubi, Vol 12, P98).

Only Allah knows best.
