Question:
Can a person pray salah whilst having a urine bottle tied up on him, like after a OP etc.?
But he could take the bottle off whilst in salah.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In Hanafi fiqh, the validity of Salah (prayer) depends on certain conditions being met, one of which is Taharah (purity). This includes both physical cleanliness and being in a state of ritual purity.
Regarding your specific question about having a urine bottle tied up on a person after an operation, there are a few key considerations:
- Taharah (Purity):
It is essential that the body and clothes are free from impurities (najasah). (Surah Mudatthir:4- “…purify your garments….”) If the urine bottle is secure and does not cause any leakage or impurity on the body or clothes, it would not invalidate the prayer; as it is a condition for prayer1
- Istinja and Istibra:
Istinja (cleaning oneself after using the toilet) and Istibra (ensuring that all urine has exited) are important in maintaining Taharah. If the urine bottle does not interfere with this process, then it should be fine.2
3. Removing the Bottle During Salah:
If it is possible to remove the urine bottle during Salah without causing hardship or health issues, it might be preferable to do so. However, if removing it causes difficulty or health risks, it is not required to do so; as `Islam is an easy religion and would not want you out of necessity to be in difficulty, as Allah has mentioned in Surah Maida:6 “………..Allāh does not intend to make difficulty for you,……..”
- Excused Person (Ma’zur):
In Hanafi fiqh, a person who has a chronic condition that causes continuous impurity (such as continuous dripping of urine) can be classified as a Ma’zur (excused person). They can pray with the condition as long as they perform Wudu (ablution) for each prayer time, even if impurity exits during the prayer. If the situation with the urine bottle falls into this category, the person can pray with it tied up.3
- General Principle of Ease:
Islam emphasises ease and not placing undue hardship on individuals, especially in situations involving health and medical conditions.
Given these points, if the urine bottle does not cause any leakage and impurity, and it is difficult or potentially harmful to remove it during Salah, it is permissible to perform Salah with it tied up. However, if it can be removed easily and without causing any issue, then it is preferable to remove it.
