Question:

In islam we believe that as humans we cant comprehend Allah. To understand this concept I in my head think of how a computer wont know how the person who created it looks like unless it was programmed to. To understand the concept of free will and Qadr i used an analogy of a time traveller. Does doing this in my head constitute likening Allah to his creation? Have I I unknowingly committed shirk or Kufr?

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

One of the most fundamental aspects of our Imān is our Aqeedah (creed).

Part of our creed is to belief: “Allāh Ta’ālā is eternal without a beginning and He is everlasting without an end. He will never perish nor cease (to exist). Nothing occurs except what He wills. Imagination cannot conceive Him nor can intellect comprehend Him. Nor do created beings resemble Him. (He is the) ever-Living who never dies and the all-Sustaining who never sleeps. He creates without any need and sustains without any effort…” [Al-Aqida al-Tahawiyya: pg. 21-26] [1]

As humans, many times we attempt to understand things by rationalising them. However, when it comes to matters of Allāh Ta’ālā we should be careful so to not cause harm to our own Imān.

For example, you mentioned in regards to a computer and its designer or manufacturer. A designer or manufacturer uses materials which are already in existence to then create other things. To some extent, we humans are also creators as we invent things and Allāh Ta’ālā is the ultimate creator. But beyond this, Allāh Ta’ālā is our Originator, creating us from nothing. There were no materials for Allāh Ta’ālā to create us from and He simply formed us the way He wished.

It does not appear that you have done anything wrong as of yet, as everything is still in your mind and no actions have been done or words uttered to make you sinful. It may be beneficial to enrol in a course on Aqidah to better learn about Allāh Ta’ālā and how to understand Him.

Only Allāh Ta’ālā knows best.
