Question:
Are you allowed to use braces wax whilst fasting? The person says if she doesn’t the braces cut through the gums but if she does then at times the wax gets swallowed so can she use it?
In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
The general rule of thumb to remember is that anything which exits your body breaks your Wudhu and anything which enters your body breaks your fast.
The condition with fasting is that it has to be something which nourishes the body by reaching the stomach or captivates the brain. It must also enter through one of the naturally open bodily passages to nullify the fast. [Radd ul-Muhtār; vol. 2, pg. 410] [1]
The use of wax would fall under this ruling and so it would not be permissible to use it while fasting if the fear is there that it will be swallowed. It may be more prudent to apply the wax during the night while they are not fasting.
Only Allāh Ta’ālā knows best.
