Are we allowed to wear suede leather?
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Answer
Tanning means treating the skin with chemicals or leaving it out in the sun to purify it and to remove any smell, decay or dampness. (Maraqi Falah p.66)
In the Hanafi Fiqh, skins of all animals besides pigs are Tahir (pure) after going through the process of tanning. Saaiduna Zaid Bin Thabit Radiallahu Anhu narrates from the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam ‘Tanning the skin of the dead animal is its purification’. (Sahih Ibn Hibban & Darul Qutni)
With regards to the skin of pigs, it is unlawful to use even though the skin may have been tanned. (Kitabut Tahaarah p.96)
Suede leather is made from the under side of skin. Primarily it is made from lamb though it may also be made from pigs, calves and deer’s.
With regards to your question if the suede leather is made from animals besides pigs then it will be permissible to use. If it is made from pigs then it will not be permissible. If in doubt it is preferable to refrain from it.
