Question:

I found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago, since week 4 of the pregnancy I’ve been bleeding. I am currently at week 5. According to my blood work, it’s inconclusive as to whether I am still pregnant as the hormone that usually increases exponentially during this time (hcg) has stayed more or less the same and is on the low side compared to normal. I’ve been told that I have to have another blood test in two weeks’ time to confirm whether I am still pregnant or whether I have had a miscarriage. I’m not sure what this bleeding is currently, so not sure if it’s normal bleeding during pregnancy, if it’s miscarriage bleeding or if it’s a period. I have been bleeding lightly (not how a period usually would be) for a week now and I have to wait another two weeks until I know what’s going on from blood work.

I have been praying and redoing wudhu for every salah time. I have also been abstaining from intercourse as I’m not sure if this is allowed. I was wondering what the ruling is regarding praying and intercourse and whether these can both be continued.

Answer:

The blood flowing from you is not considered to be the blood of menstruation as it does not fit the definition of it. [1]

However, as it is uncertain as to what the cause of the blood is until the results come through it is better to do wudu for every salah as you have been out of caution. [2]

The mouth of the womb to stop bleeding is a mechanism put in place by Allah SWT until the baby has come out of the womb or most of it. [3]

Therefore, if anything does come out it is not considered to be menstruation but something else.
