Question:

A boy becomes baaligh on the 1st Jumaad at Thaani 1440 and owns more than the Nissab at the time of becoming baaligh, eg. R10,000.

For ease of calculation and gaining the reward of Ramadan, he would like to move his Zakaah calculation date to the 1st of Ramadan annually.

Whilst I appreciate the fact that there is no need to move the Zakaah calculation date if a person would like to do so, how should the calculation be done for the period up to Ramadan?

How should the calculation be done for the three months between Jumaad at Thaani 1440 and Ramadan 1440 as well as annually thereafter, 1 Ramadan 1440, 1 Ramadan 1441, 1 Ramadan 1442, and 1 Ramadan 1443?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

You can calculate the Zakat for the rest of the year (i.e. 1440-1441) in advance and pay it in this Ramadan (i.e. Ramadan 1440).(1)

However, when the first of  Jumad-Athani comes in the following lunar year (i.e. 1441), you have to recalculate and pay the balance if there was a shortfall in the amount given.

One should not delay giving Zakat.

There’s no blame for giving it in advance.
