Question:

Can a group of Musafir stop in any town and read their own jummah amongst themselves?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

There are 4 conditions for the fulfilment of Salatul Jumu’ah;

-That it be held in a town/city

-At the time of Salatul Zuhr

-With a 2-part Khutbah

-In a large congregation. According to the Hanafi school, there must be at least 3 Mussalis present with the Imam making the fourth person present

[Al-Hidāyah: volume 1 pages 177-179] [1]

Salatul Jumuah is not necessary for five types of people;

-A traveller

-A woman

-An ill person

-A slave

-A blind person

[Al-Hidāyah: volume 1 page 179] [2]

From there, we understand that Salatul Jumu’ah would not be necessary for travellers to fulfil. However, if it is possible for them to perform Salatul Jumu’ah then it would be better if they attended the Masjid and prayed with a larger congregation. If this is not possible, and the group have enough people to meet the conditions set out above, then it would be permissible for them to pray by themselves.

Only Allah knows best.
