Question:

Mufti sahb i have heard that during first 10 days of Muharram husband and wife can neither sleep together nor can come closer to each other or perform sexual intercourse.

Answer:

Bismillah

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

It has been reported from some scholars that cohabitation should take place when there is a state of relaxation and temperamental balance in both spouses. Any form of tension, pressure, depression, etc will dampen the pleasure.

The Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) reported to have advised Sayyiduna Ali raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him) not to cohabit on the fourteenth night of every month, as the Shayatin appear in large numbers on this night, (Ibn Qayim’s Tibb Nabawi).

Some have mentioned that it is disliked to cohabit during the three nights of each month; the first, the last and the middle (fourteenth). This has also been narrated from Saiduna Ali raḍyAllāhu 'anhu (may Allāh be pleased with him).

It is preferred to have sexual intercourse at the end of the night when a person’s stomach will be light from the preceding night’s meal. Imam Ghazali (RA) has said that it is desirable to have sexual intercourse on Friday or the night preceding Friday. (Extracted from Mufti Ibn Adam Al Kawthari’s book “Islamic Guide to Sexual Relations” p.27 & p.83)

Regarding your question, I have not come across an opinion where it says that a husband and wife are not allowed to cohabit with each other during the first 10 days of Muharram.
