Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

Can a husband ask the wife to share household expenses? It is the case when the husband is earning way less than the wife and it is very difficult to run household expenses. Or it depends on wife whether she wants to share or not.

Answer:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakaatuh

The husband is obligated to provide for his wife and children according to the Sharīʿah. If a husband has allowed his wife to work, they may mutually come to an agreement in sharing the household expenses.
