Question

Can I read Hifizul Qur’an to a male teacher who is hafiz and he is about my age? The reason why I ask this question because in London there is no hafizah teacher and it is difficult for me to find hafizah teacher.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

There are many ahadith on the prohibition of men and women intermingling. Saaiduna Jarir Bin Abdullah Radiallah Anhu narrates that I asked the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam about the sudden glance (that is cast) on the face (of a non-Mahram). He commanded me that I should turn away my eyes. (Sahih Muslim)

Saaiduna Uqba Bin Amir Radiallahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said, “Beware of entering upon the ladies.” A man from the Ansar said, “Allah’s Apostle! What about the in-laws of the wife?” The Prophet replied, “The in-laws of the wife are death itself.” (Sahih Bukhari)

Allahmah Ibn Abeedeen Shami (RA) has said: (“A young woman will be prevented from exposing her face) not because it is part of the awrah, rather (for the fear of temptation.”) (Raddul Muhtar p.532 v.9)

If the female students attend the class observing the niqab and the male teacher sits before them then this will also be impermissible as Shaitan may put unlawful thoughts and desires into the male or female heart to do something unlawful, in particular, if the man and woman are alone in a room.

It is related by Saaiduna Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam has said: “No person should be alone with a woman except when there is a mahram with her.” (Sahih Bukhari)

In another hadith, the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “When a man and a woman are alone together, Shaitan is the third.” (Sunan Tirmizi p.221 v.1)

The conclusion we can come to is that it will not be permissible to read your hifz to a male teacher. (See Ahsanul Fatawa p.43 v.8) Try to find a female in your area or town who may not be a Hafiz but can read the Qur’an properly and will be able to correct your mistake and pronunciation when reading to her.
