Question:
Can a roll-on deodorant without scent but with alcohol, be used during the 5 days of Ḥajj?
In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Yes, the scentless roll-on deodorant with alcohol can be applied during the sacred state of iḥrām in ‘Umrah and Ḥajj. It should be noted that there are a number of alcohol and scent-free options available in the market. Using them would be more cautious and upright.
The alcohol in modern perfumes and deodorants is synthetic. There is no impurity in such perfumes and deodorants.
The great contemporary jurist, Shaykh Muftī Khālid Saifullāh Al-Raḥmānī writes that other than the nectar of grapes and dates, any other plant or chemical-based alcohols, in minute amounts are allowable and if anything is considered little impurity (najāsah khafīfah). Prayer is valid if perfume and deodorant containing such alcohols are applied in small quantities [that do not reach more than one-fourth of a limb]. – (See: Rad Al-Muḥtār, Vol 3, Page 536, Dār Al-Fikr1, Jadīd Fiqhī Masāil Li Al-Raḥmānī, Vol 1, Page 219, Zam Zam Publishers)
