Can Fidyah be given to one’s children?

CategoriesZakah [309]

My old mother cannot fast due to old age and I have a disabled adult brother who is poor and lives in a different house from my mother in a village in Africa. Will it be acceptable for my mother to give fidya to my disable brother for her missed fast.

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

The recipients for the fidyah are exactly the same for zakat. (Fatawa Darul Uloom Deoband p.459 v.6).  Allah (SWA) has mentioned the recipients of zakat in the Holy Qur’an “The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free the captives and the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and (for) the wayfarers; a duty imposed by Allah. Allah is knower, Wise.” (Surah Tawbah v.60)

The same way one cannot give zakat to ones children it will therefore, not be permissible for your mother to give her fidyah to her disable dependant son. (Fatawa Mahmoodiyah p.87 v.13)
