Question:
When I need to go to the launderette to get my clothes washed and dried it can take around an hour to an hour and a half. I end up spending a bit of time there as there is no point going home due to having to return in a little while. While I’m at the launderette they will probably have the TV on and in other launderettes probably music. My question is can I read Quran there despite the TV being on as I’m not sitting there to watch TV but to do my laundry and I don’t just want to browse on my phone when I can be reading some Quran?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Allah (عز و جل) says in the Noble Quran;
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُواْ لَهُ وَأَنصِتُواْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ ﴿٢٠٤﴾
“So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy”. (Surah Araf, Verse 204)
It is pleasing to hear that you have the eagerness to recite the Quran in the launderette and squander time. Reciting the Quran daily with devotion will inculcate the love of Allah in a person’s heart, and it strengthens one’s relationship with Allah. You should try reciting the Quran in a place where there is no disturbance.
However, if you are at a launderette and you want to recite the Quran while waiting, you may request the owner to shut off their music or you may use headphones for the duration of your reciting the Quran.
If the owner is Muslim, make an endeavor of encouraging reverence of the Quran in their hearts.
If they do not comply with you, you may recite the Quran even if the tv is on as long as it does not divert your heart from the Quran recitation, or else, it is not permitted. [1]
Only Allah knows best.
