Question:

Can we use the husband’s name after marriage?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

It was not common in the time of our Messenger Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam to use the husband’s name after marriage. This is why none of the wives of Messenger Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam changed their names after marriage e.g. Khadija bint Khuwaylid, Zaynab bint Jahsh and Sawda bint Zam’ah – all wives of the Messenger Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam.

They did not adjust or change their names to show their marriage with Messenger Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam even though that would have been honourable. So, if it was not done by the Mothers of Believers then it is recommended for Muslim women today not to change their name after marriage.
