Question:
Can you please give me some guidelines as how and when to make dua. Did Nabi saw raise his hand when making dua or he left it down. Should I make dua before salah or after salah ?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Dua is very important in the life of a believer and it is the essence of ibadah (worship). In the Quran Allah says (Surah Ghafir ayah 60)
“And your Lord has said, “Call Me, I will respond to you.”
Dua is the weapon for a believer. There are few instances where dua are readily accepted. Dua made on Jumu’ah, before salah between the azaan and the iqamah and after the fardh salah, at the end portion of the night are accepted. Likewise dua a person make for others In their absence.
When a person raise his hand and make dua, Allah doesn’t let the hand to come down except that he accept the dua.
Therefore a person should observe the etiquette and they are:
To have wudhu, Facing the qiblah and Sit in tashahhud.
Praise Allah and send durood upon our Nabi.
Show your inabily and your weakness. Be humble.
Seek the forgiveness of Allah. Then start asking for needs.
As for raising the hand, a person should raise his hand upto the shoulder and not high. Some instances Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلمx didn’t raise his hand. For example dua between the two khutbah of Jumu’ah and the masnoon dua like eating, drinking, relieving oneself, and sleeping.
More important is when a person is making dua, his earning must be halal, the food and drink he consume must be halal and the dress he wear must get from halal means.
Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
