Question:

Subject: I doubt if I have committed apostasy

Message Body:
Salam aleykoum. My cousin was imitating famous French videos. We were laughing and he started imitating a video: it’s two men, in the month of Ramadan, and one of them hides himself to eat, and the other comes and tells him, “What are you doing? You broke your fast! It’s not because you hide yourself in the fridge that you can break it.” This video is known here to be “funny.” When I heard that, I stopped laughing and was ready to leave because of that mockery, but I told myself, “Maybe my cousin will stop.” At that moment, he had imitated until “you broke your fast,” and I was 50% sure but I stayed, and unfortunately, he continued. And I laughed at the rest because of his imitation and left. Now I’m in panic because for me, it’s mocking Islam. Does it? Please can you answer me, I’m really worried.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيم

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Humouring yourself regarding things that are general and not related to belief is permissible.

Joking related to religious matters is forbidden and will be classified as a big sin. This is because making fun of or mocking part of religion or anything relating to religion is a disbelieving act, which is sinful. In the Qur’an, Muslims are reminded again and again not to treat Islam as a joke and not to take it in a joking manner. That is, anything related to religion, such as in this case fasting. To hide oneself from people and eat is purposeless, as fasting is done for the sake of Allah, and nothing in the heavens or Earth is hidden from Allah.

Allah states in the Qur’an,

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشۡتَرَوُاْ ٱلۡكُفۡرَ بِٱلۡإِيمَٰنِ لَن يَضُرُّواْ ٱللَّهَ شَيۡـٔٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ[1]
Indeed, those who purchase disbelief [in exchange] for faith – never will they harm Allah at all, and for them is a painful punishment.

Relating to your question, laughing along with your friend whilst he was mocking Islam is sinful, and joining in with his activities makes you liable to engaging in the same activity. On the apparent, you are supporting his actions by laughing with him and providing him with the response that he seeks. However, if you perform a thorough repentance and show sorrow for your actions and do not engage in laughing with him again at such matters, then inshallah Allah will forgive you because His mercy and forgiveness are all-encompassing. Do not worry regarding Allah’s forgiveness, as long as the repentance is sincere.

[2] اعْلَم أَن الله تَعَالَى بِالنِّسْبَةِ إِلَى إِيجَاد الْعَالم ثَلَاث صِفَات مترتبة:

أَحدهَا: الإبداع وَهُوَ إِيجَاد شَيْء لَا من شَيْء فَيخرج الشَّيْء من كتم الْعَدَم بِغَيْر مَادَّة: وَسُئِلَ رَسُول الله صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَن أول هَذَا الْأَمر؟ فَقَالَ: كَانَ الله وَلم يكن شَيْء قبله.

وَالثَّانيَِة: الْخلق وَهُوَ إِيجَاد الشَّيْء من شَيْء كَمَا خلق آدم من التُّرَاب:

{وَخلق الجان من مارج من نَار} .

وَقد دلّ الْعقل وَالنَّقْل على أَن الله تَعَالَى خلق الْعَالم أنواعا وأجناسا وَجعل لكل نوع وجنس خَواص، فنوع الْإِنْسَان مثلا خاصته النُّطْق، وَظُهُور الْبشرَة واستواء الْقَامَة، وَفهم الْخطاب، وَنَوع الْفرس خاصته الصهيل، وَكَون بَشرته شعراء، وقامته عوجاء، وَألا يفهم الْخطاب

[3] البر كل عمل يَفْعَله الْإِنْسَان قَضِيَّة لإنقياد للملأ الْأَعْلَى واضمحلاله فِي تلقي الإلهام من الله وصيرورته فانيا فِي مُرَاد الْحق، وكل عمل يجازى عَلَيْهِ

خيرا فِي الدُّنْيَا أَو الْآخِرَة، وكل عمل يصلح الارتفاقات الني بنى عَلَيْهَا نظام الْإِنْسَان، وكل عمل يُفِيد حَالَة الانقياد، وَيدْفَع الْحجب.

وَالْإِثْم كل عمل يَفْعَله الْإِنْسَان قَضِيَّة لانقياده للشَّيْطَان وصيرورته فانيا فِي مُرَاده، وكل عمل يجازى عَلَيْهِ شرا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَة، وكل عمل يفْسد الارتفاقات وكل عمل يُفِيد هَيْئَة مضادة للانقياد، ويؤكد الْحجب.

وكما أَن الارتفاقات استنبطها أولو الْخِبْرَة، فاقتدى بهم النَّاس بِشَهَادَة قُلُوبهم. وَاتفقَ عَلَيْهِ أهل الأَرْض، أَو من يعْتد بِهِ مِنْهُم، فَكَذَلِك للبر سننن ألهمها الله تَعَالَى فِي قُلُوب المؤيدين فِي بِالنورِ الملكي الْغَالِب عَلَيْهِم خلق الْفطْرَة بِمَنْزِلَة مَا ألهم فِي قُلُوب النَّحْل مَا يصلح بِهِ معاشها، فجروا عَلَيْهَا، وَأخذُوا بهَا وأرشدوا إِلَيْهَا وحثوا عَلَيْهَا، فاقتدى بهم النَّاس، وَاتفقَ عَلَيْهَا أهل الْملَل جَمِيعهَا فِي أقطار الأَرْض على تبَاعد بلدانهم وَاخْتِلَاف أديانهم بِحكم مُنَاسبَة فطرية واقتضاء نَوْعي، وَلَا يضر ذَلِك اخْتِلَاف صور تِلْكَ السّنَن بعد الِاتِّفَاق على أُصُولهَا، وَلَا صدود طَائِفَة مخدجة لَو تَأمل فيهم

أَصْحَاب البصائر لم يشكو أَن مادتهم عَصَتْ الصُّورَة النوعية، وَلم تمكن لأحكامها، وهم فِي الْإِنْسَان كالعضو الزَّائِد فِي الْجَسَد، زَوَاله أجمل لَهُ من بَقَائِهِ

[4] بيان الأمر الذي يدعى إليه:

أما الشيء الذي يدعى إليه، ويجب على الدعاة أن يوضحوه للناس، كما أوضحه الرسل عليهم الصلاة والسلام فهو الدعوة إلى صراط الله المستقيم، وهو الإسلام، وهو دين الله الحق، هذا هو محل الدعوة،
