Question:
Respected Ulema Kiraam,
I’d like to confirm a previous discussion regarding feeding pets’ meat. It was mentioned that meat only needs to be Taahir/Paak, not necessarily halal.
I have two questions:
1. Does this imply that meat from a non- halal animal, such as a lion, is permissible if blood is drained?
2.When we say the meat needs to be Taahir, does it simply require the shedding of blood, or must it be slaughtered according to Islamic rites, such as by a Muslim or Person of the Book?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
I hope this message finds you in the best of Iman and health.
Islamic dietary law clearly defines what is Halāl (permissible) and Tahir (ritually pure) for human consumption. However, when it comes to feeding animals, the rulings may differ, particularly in relation to the source of the meat and ritual slaughter.
1.Whether meat from non-ḥalāl animals (like lions) can be used for pet food.
2.Whether the requirement of the meat being Tahir necessitates Islamic slaughter, or merely the draining of blood.
In the Hanafi madhab, animals that are haram to eat (like lions, tigers, or any beast of prey) are generally considered impure (Najis) after death, even if the blood is drained. Their flesh is not Tahir, and thus not permissible to benefit from, even for feeding animals.
So even if the blood is drained, if the animal itself is not permissible to consume (haram) or it dies without proper slaughter, then its flesh is impure (Najis) and it is not permissible to use or feed.
It is not permissible to feed your pets meat from haram animals (e.g., lion), as such animals are inherently impure and their flesh is Najis, regardless of how they die.
For meat to be Tahir, it must come from a ḥalāl animal and be slaughtered according to Islamic rites (by a Muslim or Ahl al-Kitāb). Simply draining the blood is not enough if the slaughter conditions are not met.
Carrion (maytah) or improperly slaughtered meat remains Najis and impermissible to feed even to animals, based on the principle that najāsah cannot be used or benefited from.
