Question:
I upload dress designs on Instagram so that people see and buy and customize it.
1. If I see a dress on Pinterest and I recreate that and sell it, Is it permissible?
2. Can I watch a tutorial to recreate it?
3. Can the same ruling be applied to YouTube videos where they make stitching tutorials?
4. I want to do hand embroidery and sell. Can I watch Pinterest or YouTube tutorials?
5. If a customer shows me a picture from an online image, can I recreate that?
6. If I watch different videos for neck designing and sleeve designing for embroidery to combine in one dress, Is it permissible?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
1. If you see a dress on Pinterest and recreate it to sell, is it permissible?
Recreating a dress that is available publicly, like on Pinterest, is generally permissible as long as you are not copying something that is copyrighted or a protected design.
2. Can you watch a tutorial to recreate it?
Yes, watching tutorials to learn how to create or improve your designs is permissible, since video tutorials are generally uploaded for people to learn and practice with.
3. Can the same ruling be applied to YouTube videos where they make stitching tutorials?
Yes, the same applies to YouTube stitching tutorials. If the videos are publicly available and intended for educational purposes, it is permissible to use them to improve your skills or recreate designs.
4. Can you watch Pinterest or YouTube tutorials for hand embroidery and sell your creations?
Yes, you can watch tutorials for hand embroidery and sell your creations. The tutorials are there to help you learn, and the work you do with your own hands is your own creative product. As long as the tutorials are meant for public use and not infringing on copyright, this is permissible.
5. If a customer shows you an online image, can you recreate it?
If a customer shows you an image of a dress and asks you to recreate it, it is permissible as long as the design is not copyrighted or exclusive to a specific designer or brand. You should avoid copying a unique, protected design exactly but can make modifications or take inspiration from it. Copying a copyrighted design would be considered stealing someone’s intellectual property and could potentially lead to legal issues.
6. If you watch different videos for neck designing, sleeve designing, and embroidery to combine into one dress, is it permissible?
Yes, combining different techniques and designs from various tutorials is permissible. Using different sources to create something new is not only allowed but is a creative process that many designers follow. As long as you’re not violating any intellectual property laws, it’s fine to blend ideas from multiple sources.
Only Allah knows best.
