Did the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam see Allah on Miraj?
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.
Answer
The companions differed as to whether the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam saw Allah on the night of Miraj or not. Saaidah Aaisha Radiallahu Anha and Saaiduna Abdullah Ibn Masud Radiallahu Anhu were of the view that he did not see Allah (SWA).
Saaidah Aaisha Radiallahu Anha has said, “Whoever tells you that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam saw Allah, is lying. He said that no vision could grasp him (Allah (SWA)).” (Surah Anaam v.103) (Sahih Bukhari p.1098 v.2)
Saaiduna Abu Dhar Ghifari Radiallahu Anhu said; “I asked the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam, “Did you see your lord? He said; he is veiled by light, how could I see him.” (Sahih Muslim p.99 v.1)
On the other hand Saaiduna Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu is of the view that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam saw Allah on the night of Miraj. (Sunan Tirimizi p.163 v.2)
Hafiz Ibn Hajr (RA) reconciled between the two narrations and has said that the “Vision” stated in the hadith is vision with the eyes of the heart and not with the eyes of his head. This is established by Saaiduna Ibn Abbas other narration in Sahih Muslim where he said: “He saw him with his heart”. (Fathul Bari)
Imam Bajuri (RA) says that the preferred position is that the Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam did see Allah (SWA) with the eyes on his head on the night of Miraj. (Tuhfatul Murid P.117-118)
