Question:
Does wearing a t shirt make your salah Makruh if you are leading Salah or just praying?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Allah (عز و جل) says:
خُذُواْ زِينَتَكُمْ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ
”Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer.” (Suratul-Araf, Verse 31).
To perform Salah whilst wearing a half sleeve or sleeveless shirt is Makruh (Disliked). 1
Also, it is Makruh Tahrimi (prohibitively disliked) to perform Salah with the sleeves folded. 2
It is necessary for the male to keep the pants or the upper garment above the ankles in Salah by folding it just as it is the ruling out of Salah.
It is Makruh (disliked) to wear, in Salah, any clothing that a person of sound religious disposition will not wear in a decent gathering or even in front of a reputable person.
In Salah a person is standing before Allah (سبحانه و تعالى), therefore, short sleeve shirts are not a suitable form of dress for Salah.
It is disliked to pray in lowly clothes that a person wears at home if one has other clothes available, otherwise, it is not disliked. 3
Likewise, it is Makruh to enter into Salah with the sleeves rolled-up and to roll-up the sleeves whilst in Salah will nullify the Salah, as it will be considered to be an unreasonable motion.4
It is Makruh to pray in short sleeves, which is only in regard to men.
In the aforementioned case, a person’s Salah will be Makruh (Disliked) whether he is an Imam or just praying behind an Imam or even solely.
Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
