Question:

I am aware of the Hadith that tells us about being in closeness with Allah during sujood so we should supplicate as much as we can. I would like to pour my heart out and get close as much as we can. However, I would like to know the ruling regarding supplications in my own language during Sujood as I keep receiving contradictory advice. I have heard that own language supplication is permissible and can be done in any salah. But also have the ruling that this is not advised (should be in Arabic only) but can be done in nawafil prayers. Please could you help and give me advice! That would be very much appreciated.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

It will be considered makruh to read in a language other than Arabic in salah.

(Raddul Mukhtar – volume 2 – page 233-234 – Darul Kutub Ilmiyyah)

It is mentioned in a hadith:

We came to the Prophet (s.a.w) and we were young men nearly of equal ages and we stayed with him for twenty nights. Allah’s Messenger (s.a.w) was a very kind man and when he realized our longing for our families, he asked us about those whom we had left behind. When we informed him, he said, Go back to your families and stay with them and teach them (religion) and order them (to do good deeds). The Prophet (s.a.w) mentioned things some of which I remembered and some I did not. Then he said, Pray as you have seen me praying, and when it is the time of prayer, one of you should pronounce the call (Adhan) for the prayer and the eldest of you should lead the prayer.  (Sahih Bukhari – hadith 7246)

The Prophet (s.a.w) has told the people to pray how he prays, and the prophet would pray in the Arabic language.

However, out of salah, you can do dua in whichever language you prefer.

It is also mentioned in another hadith:

Talking to persons is not fitting during the prayer, for it consists of glorifying Allah, declaring his Greatness. and recitation of the Qur’an or words to that effect. (Sahih Muslim – hadith 537)
