Question:
A sister has asked:
She is due to go for umrah tomorrow and is on her haydh. She is only there for 5 nights.
She said she will try to return to Makkah to do her umrah but,
In the event that her haydh does NOT finish by the time she leaves, and it is NOT possible to return, how does one come out of ihram?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Answer:
One in a state of major impurity such as during her period cannot enter the Masjid Al-Haram nor perform Tawaf. Thus, of the required acts of Umrah (i.e. Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and trimming the hair), the only act she will be unable to perform is the Tawaf [1].
She should therefore enter into Ihram, omitting the accompanying two Rak’ah, and perform all the rituals of Hajj besides Tawaf. Should her period continue until her departure date, she can exit Ihram by trimming her hair and paying Dam to compensate for missing the Tawaf (a small animal such as a sheep or goat or one-seventh of a large animal such as a camel or cow to be sacrificed in the Haram, approx. £160 – £200) [2].
Some have suggested that out of necessity such a person can do Ghusl and wear a pad to prevent leaking, and then, after waiting until the last possible moment, perform Tawaf despite their period and pay Dam afterwards to compensate. However, this would violate the prohibition of entering the Masjid during one’s period.
Remember that the reward for one’s Umrah is based not on the success of completing it, but on one’s intention and the amount of exertion and hardship one faces in the process [3].
Only Allah s.w.t knows best.
