Question:
Assalamu alaikum,
Person is inflicted with extreme OCD and waswasa such that if he wears anything or takes in his hand any cup or plate or glass or any other daily usage items and if there is anything written on that shoes or shirt or glass shaytan he starts getting waswasa in his mind.
The question is, is the English word “typhoon” a kinayah word for divorce. As the person was wearing a trouser with these words written on it and his mind started thinking about whether these words constituted the kinayah words or not. Then after some time, he started having extreme waswas.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
Wa alaykum Assalaam
I believe your understanding of talaq kinayah is: that if a person says any word with the intention of talaq, then talaq will occur. Unfortunately, this understanding is incorrect.
The correct understanding of talaq kinayah is: if a person says a word/phrase that does not explicitly mean talaq; but could inexplicitly elude to talaq; then in this case; if the person had the intention of giving talaq, then talaq would occur. Examples of words that could inexplicitly refer to talaq include:
- You are free
- Go back to your parents’ house
- We are totally finished, Etc.
The word “typhoon” does not imply talaq at all hence, talaq has not occurred no matter what the intention of the husband is.
Please don’t allow waswasa to control your life. Seek treatment from a doctor for your OCD if required. Also constantly stay in the state of Dhikr to ward off the shaytan.
Only Allah knows best.
