Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah

What is the fiqh of basic Quranic recitation? I remember reading an answer many years ago that in this day and age due to general ignorance, this is excused for the general masses.

For example, my basic recitation like others in the west is poor, I find it difficult to say certain letters or sounds from different part of the body (throat, tongue, chest etc).

Common mistakes are saying “kulhuwaAllahuahad” instead of “qulhuwaAllahuahad” and other similar letters or sounds. What is the ruling for people in our times regarding basic recitation?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

A person should generally endeavor to increase the beauty of his recitation of the Quran by beautifying the rules of tajwid and omission points of letters, known as Maharaj in Arabic. Allah (SWT) commands the Prophet (peace be upon him), and by extension all Muslims to “Recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.”[1]

One would be considered sinful, however, when the following two conditions are met:

  1. The meaning of the verse changes
  2. If one does not recite with the correct declension (i’rab)[2]

If there is difficulty in pronouncing some letters or words, you should not feel discouraged to recite the Quran, it is part of the learning process to make mistakes and errors.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Someone who recites the Qur’an and is fluent in it, is with the noble pious angels. Someone who recites the Qur’an and stammers in it has two rewards as it is difficult for him.”[3]
