Question:
While offering namaz can we fold our trousers from below so as to follow the sunnat of opening ankle.
Answer:
There are many Ahadith narrated regarding the severity of allowing any item of clothing to hang below the ankle.
Abu Hurairah has narrated that Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The part of an Izar(lower garment) which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.” (SaheehBukhari 5787)
Hudhaifah has narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has said: 'The Izar should come to the middle of the shins and the calf. If you insist, then a little lower and if you insist, then a little further down, but the Izar has no right to (come to) the ankle." (Sunan An-Nasai 5329)
Asha’th narrates "I heard Sa'eed bin Jubair narrate from Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Allah will not look at the Musbil (the one who lets his Izar come below the ankles).'"(Sunan an-Nasa'i 5332)
Looking at the above mentioned Ahadith, it is clear that it is necessary to refrain from covering the ankles at all times, including both in and out of salah.
To allow the lower garment to cover the ankle during salah is makruh tahrimi and this will reduce the reward of the salah, thus should be avoided. (FataawaMahmoodiyyah, Page 654, Volume 6, Darul Iftaa Jaamiah Farooqiyah & Fataawa Raheemiyyah, Page 145-148, Volume 5, Darul Isha’at)
In regards to your question, as there is a need to fold the trousers when they are covering the ankles, it will be permissible to fold the trousers. (Umdatul Qari Sharh Sahih Al-Bukhari, Page 440, Volume 21, Darul Kutubul Ilmiyyah)
