Question:

If a person does black magic and other major and minor sin will Allah forgive that person and what are the consequences of black magic on that person?

In the name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

First of all, it should be understood that black magic is a major sin and it is such a wretched act which would nullify one’s beliefs. The reason for this is that for a person to perform such heinous acts, they are required to denounce their belief in Allāh Ta’ālā and adopt the beliefs of the devils. Thus, taking them out of the fold of Islām.

“The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: ‘Whoever ties a knot and blows on it, he has practised magic; and whoever practices magic, he has committed Shirk, and  whoever hangs up something (as an amulet) will be entrusted to it.” [Sunan an-Nasā’ī: Hadith 4079] [1]

The Prophet ﷺ said: “There are three who will not enter paradise: one who is addicted to wine, one who breaks ties of relationship, and one who believes in magic.” [Mishkāt al-Masābīh: Hadith 3656] [2]

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commanded: “Avoid the seven noxious things.” It was asked: “What are they, Messenger of Allāh?” He ﷺ replied: “Associating anything with Allāh, performing magic…” [Sāhīh al-Muslim: Hadith 89] [3]

Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ said: “Whoever takes seven ‘Ajwa dates in the morning will not be affected by magic or poison on that day.” [Sāhīh al-Bukhārī: Hadith 5445, 5768, 5769, 5779; Sāhīh al-Muslim: Hadith 2047; Sunan Abī Dāwūd: Hadith 3876] [4]

Allāh Ta’ālā says: “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning), do not become despondent in the mercy of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Surah Az-Zumar; 39:53] [5]

Only through sincere repentance and Taubah can one truly atone for their sins. Sincere Taubah wipes away our sins making us free from them.

There are three conditions for repenting;

  • Stop committing the sin;
  • Feel remorse for the sin which has been committed;
  • Make a sincere vow to never return back to sin.

This is the method of doing Taubah. Taubah does not require any action to be attributed to it, like the performing of 2 Rak’at Salah. It is a spiritual connection between the servant and his Lord where we are able to convey our remorse and vow to never return back to sin. Nonetheless, physical actions can also be done along with it, but they are not a prerequisite to the Taubah.

Only Allāh Ta’ālā knows best.
