Gargling in fardh ghusl

CategoriesTaharah [532]

For Fard ghusal is the gargling Fard or cleaning the mouth I’m a bit confused?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

It is Fard to rinse the mouth during ghusal in such a way that the water reaches all parts of the mouth as it is understood from the following verse of the Holy Qur’an “If you are in a state of Janaba, purify yourself (bathe your whole body, attain thorough cleanliness)”.

(Surah Ma’idah 5:6)

It is not necessary to gargle for the water to reach all parts of the mouth; this can be gained by merely performing ‘kulli’ i.e. rinsing the mouth. Hence it is mentioned in Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband that “gargling is sunnah for the person who is not fasting”.
