Question

My father earned income from a haram source and after some years, he left the haram way of income. In between those years, he made properties with which he is getting rent. He gave me a lump sum amount of money to do business myself and I started business in a Halal way. When I contacted the local Mufti in our town, he said the income is haram and everything is haram.

My question is:

1. Is my income halal or haram?

2. Should my father give all that what he earned from haram in charity?

Answer:

In order to properly answer your question, we would need the details about how your father earned that haram money. What type of transaction was it? Was every aspect of the transaction haram or only part of it?

This information is needed in order for us to properly answer your question.

As for you taking money from your father as a gift, the general principle is what Imam Ibn Nujaym explained, “If the greater portion of the giver’s wealth is halal then there is nothing wrong with accepting his gift as long as it is not clear that it is from the haraam portion thereof. If the greater portion of his wealth is haraam, he should not accept the gift or take that wealth, unless he says that it is halaal, and he inherited it or borrowed it.[1]
