Question:
The parents of my ex husband are back in Germany. I had a very good relationship to them and we want to meet. Is this right that my ex father in law can see me uncovered and that I can talk to him?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
In principle, the father in law is a mahram for his daughter in law since he is perpetually haraam to marry her.
A mahram is he with who marriage is permanently prohibited.
A woman does not have to observe hijab in front of her father in law. However, a daughter in law should dress in a modest way in front of her father in law especially in these times when immorality is common. Precaution should be taken and avoid being in seclusion.
As for the question above, the father in law remain as a mahram even after divorce therefore it will be permissible to visit your ex in laws. Keep in mind shariah emphasises shame and modesty. Also very important to keep any discussion as formal.
Only Allah (عز و جل) knows best.
