Question
We are trying our best at home to do jamaat for Taraweeh but I’ve been told that reading in jamaat you need to be a hafiz so if a hafiz is not available then there is more ajar (reward) in reading it yourself than jamaat is this true.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
To complete the recitation of the Quran once during Taraweeh in Ramadan is Sunnah. (Fatawa Shami, Vol 2, page 789)
First of all, for men, praying Taraweeh in the masjid with Jamat is more virtuous than in the home. So, efforts should be made to pray Taraweeh in the masjid to get maximum rewards.
Of course, it is more rewarding than you pray behind hafiz as by doing that you get the reward of listening to the entire Quran during salah.
If for any unforeseen reasons you cannot go to the masjid and there is no hafiz available, then you can do Jamat at home. You will be rewarded for it as well.
Lastly, we should not confine Quran only to Taraweeh but we should recite it ourselves in the day and/or night and reap maximum rewards of the beautiful month.
Only Allah knows best.
