Question:

How many wives did the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) have

Answer:

Bismillah

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

The Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) had eleven wives, two of whom had passed away in his very life: Khadijah and Zainab Bint Khuzaimah raḍyAllāhu 'anha (may Allāh be pleased with her).  The Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) had nine wives at the time of his demise. (Siratul Mustafa p.281 v.3)

There are some narrations where it says that the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) had 14 or 15 wives. The reason for this is that certain scholars have added onto the list those wives whom the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) married but divorced them before the marriage could be consummated. They were Asma Bint Numan, Jauniyah, Amrah Bint Yazid Kilabiyyah. Certain scholars are of the view that Mariyah Qibtiyah, the slave girl of the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him), was the wife of the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) as well. (Siratul Mustafa p.335 v.3)
