Question:

I read many Fataawa on makeup and how it affects the wudu. But I do not understand how to differentiate between make up the prevents water reaching the skin and makeup that doesn’t.

When I wash my face I feel water, I feel the temperature but I still see the colour of the makeup its not completely removed.

How do I know if water has penetrated the foundation for example?

Im talking about makeup that does not state it is waterproof on the packaging.

Same quetion applies to sunscreen please.

Answer:

All specs of make-up must be removed prior to performing Wudhu and Ghusl. The ruling is the same for glue, nail polish, paint and any other substance which acts as a barrier preventing water from penetrating through it. These substances form a layer over the skin which prevent water from reaching the skin below them. Thus, preventing the completion of Wudhu and Ghusl.

“O you who believe, when you rise for Salāh, (prayer) wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and make MasaH (wiping with hands) over your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of major impurity then, cleanse yourselves well (by having a shower)…” [Surah al-Mâ’idah; 5:6] [1]

Under the Tafseer of this verse, it has been elaborated in great detail the fundamental actions required for the fulfilment of Wudhu and Ghusl alike. From them, is the necessity that water fully penetrates all the required limbs when completing Wudhu and Ghusl. [Tafseer Tabari] [2]

Possibly, the simplest method to check if the make-up has been removed adequately, would be to wipe that area with a tissue or cotton swab. If the make-up continues to come off and stain the swab, then the removal has not been completed to an adequate level. However, if the swab remains clean, then Wudhu would now be valid.

Alternatively, Wudhu could be done before putting make-up on. Then Salāh could be prayed even with the make-up on, as long as the Wudhu has not broken.

Oils, creams, lotions and etc. do not fall under the same ruling as they do not prevent water penetrating below them.
