Question:

We as spouses live in separate houses. My husband asks me to remain in a bikini during the time he remains at home. Is it a sin to roam in the house in a bikini in the presence of your husband, while no other being can watch us? do angels not visit, when I am in a bikini? I have learnt that when husband and wife become intimate in the bedroom to fulfil each other’s desires there is rahmat on them. how is it that it becomes rahmat in the bedroom and sin outside the bedroom to be in intimate clothes?

Answer:

It is permissible to expose the body in front of one’s spouse, there is no awrah (parts of the body that must be covered)  between husband and wife. A husband can look at any part of the wife’s body and the wife can do the same, without them being sinful in any way.

However, there is another factor to take into consideration and that is hayā ( modesty and shame). Every Muslim should have a level of shame and modesty within him, which prevents him from doing certain undesirable acts. Although it is allowed to reveal one’s private parts in front of one’s spouse, it is still better and advisable not to.

In one narration the Messenger of Allahصلي was asked about a person being in their home can he or she  expose their awrah (shame), the Messenger of Allah صلي responded by saying;  “Allah, (The most high) is more deserving of your modesty than the people”

مرقاة المفاتيح شرح مشكاة المصابيح (5 / 2056) 

 (قال: قال رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم -) أي له (احفظ عورتك) أي من التكشف أو من الجماع والأول أبلغ (إلا من زوجتك أو ما ملكت يمينك) أي من الإماء وهذا يدل على أن الملك والنكاح يبيحان النظر إلى السوأتين من الجانبين والحديث مقتبس من قوله تعالى: {والذين هم لفروجهم حافظون  إلا على أزواجهم أو ما ملكت أيمانهم فإنهم غير ملومين} [المؤمنون: 5 – 6] (قلت: يا رسول الله أفرأيت) أي فأخبرني (إذا كان الرجل خاليا) كيف الحكم (قال فالله) أو ملائكته (أحق أن يستحيا منه) وهذا يدل على وجوب الستر في الخلوة إلا عند الضرورة كما سبق (رواه الترمذي وأبو داود وابن ماجه) وفي الجامع الصغير رواه أحمد والأربعة والبيهقي والحاكم ولفظ «احفظ عورتك إلا من زوجتك أو ما ملكت يمينك قيل إذا كان القوم بعضهم في بعض قال إن استطعت أن لا يرينها أحد فلا يرينها قيل إذا كان أحدنا خاليا قال الله أحق أن يستحيا منه من الناس»”

“مانظرت أو مارأیت فرج رسول الله صلی الله علیه وسلم قط”.
