Question:
“If a person possesses mostly gold, with a small additional zakatable item like cash, and the total value falls below the gold Zakat threshold but exceeds the silver Zakat threshold, is Zakat obligatory?”
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
When paying Zakat, you will add the value of your gold to the value of your other assets such as cash. After deducting your liabilities such as your debts owed to others, if the value of your wealth exceeds either the gold OR the silver Nisab, you will have to pay Zakat on your wealth.
As you are aware, the silver Nisab is of much lower value than the gold Nisab. Hence you will pay Zakat based on the silver Nisab, even if the majority of your assets are gold.
If your ONLY asset was gold, then you would pay Zakat on the gold based on the Gold Nisab. However since you have other assets, you will pay Zakat based on the lower Nisab, which is silver.
