Question:

If an unmarried woman masturbates during menstruation, and she does ghusl at the end of the menses cycle, is double ghusl required according to the Hanafis? Or one ghusl will suffice for both? (Please note: She knows it’s a sin and she is very regretful!) If yes then how to do double ghusl?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

We know for both cases (menstruation and masturbation with seminal fluid coming out), a shower is necessary.

Our beloved prophet (SAW) has mentioned:

The seminal ejection is what makes bathing necessary. [Muslim Hadeeth no: 343]

In Muslim it mentions (in his Saheeh):

A woman asked the Messenger of Allah (SAW) how to wash after menstruation. She mentioned that he taught her how to take bath. [Muslim Hadeeth no. 332]

If a person becomes junub (impure) twice, one shower is necessary. For all forms of ceremonial/ritual impurity (janaabah), one ghusl is sufficient. There’s no need to take a different ghusl for each of them. For both, she simply needs to take one ghusl.

The act of doing one ghusl for multiple impurities is mentioned by Imam Muslim in his Saheeh:

The messenger of Allah (SAW) used to have sexual intercourse with his wives with a single bath. [Muslim Hadeeth no: 309]

Ibn Qudaamah mentions in his Al-Mughni:

If there are two things that require Ghusl, like menses and Janaabah, or the meeting of the male and female private parts and ejaculation, and one intends purity from both of them by performing one Ghusl, then it is sufficient for both. This is the opinion of most scholars; among whom are ‘Ataa’, Abu Az-Zinaad, Rabee’ah, Maalik, Ash-Shaafi’i, Is-haaq, and the scholars of the Hanafi School. [Al-Mughni Vol 2 page 328]
