Question:

What is the ruling concerning one who says that that the blessed “uswah” (example) of the Prophet Muhammad ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is NOT “kaamil” (perfect/complete). Meaning, that the Prophet Muhammad’s ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)“finality” (khaatimiyyah) is only with restricted to Nubuwwah (Prophethood) and that he is NOT the “final model” with regards to “minhaaj” (model/example/pattern). And that for Muslims to believe that the Prophet Muhammad ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is a “kaamil model” (complete model) would be unnatural (“ghayr fiTri”), inapplicable (“ghayr`amali”), and un-Islamic (“ghayr Islami”). What is the ruling concerning such an individual who explicitly expresses the aforementioned beliefs? Is such a person within the bounds of Ahl al-Sunnah? Within the bounds of Islam?

Answer:

Bismillah

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

It is a fundamental belief of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah to believe in the habits, traits and actions of the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) to be complete and of the highest calibre. (Aqaaidul Islam p.62)

If someone believes the uswah of the Prophet of Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) to be incomplete then such a belief may take a person out of the fold of Islam.
