Question:
My clothes were touched/sniffed by a dog today. The dog’s nose was wet. Does the wetness make the clothes impure? Also if a dog licks your clothing, or your clothes become impure and you have no alternative clothing to change into as you are at work and it is also difficult to ascertain what part of your clothing is impure.
Should you carry on reading Salah at work or wait till you get home and change into clean clothing but end up reading the Salah as qadha?
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Answer:
According to the Hanafi school, the dog is not fundamentally filthy.1 However, its saliva is filthy2 and its uncleanness is the uncleanness of its flesh and blood.3
If one’s clothes come into contact with a wet dog’s body, no filth will be considered to have transferred to one.
However, if there had been some sort of filth on the dog’s body, and it comes into contact with clothes, then that clothes will be regarded as filthy.
Likewise, if a dog licks one’s clothes, then the area which is licked would need to be washed three times or under flowing water, like other filth.4
A simple brushing of a dog against one’s clothes does not make them impure.
Therefore, if a dog’s saliva gets onto one’s clothes, one must simply wash the concerned area till there is no remnant of the saliva left and this should be done by pouring water over the affected area three times and squeezing the water out.
Therefore, by the mere touching of the dog, if there are no impurities passed on to the clothes, then Salah in these clothes shall be valid and the clothes shall be considered pure.
In the aforementioned case, since the dog’s nose was wet, the clothes will only become impure if there is filth on its nose.
If a dog licks your clothing, or your clothes become impure and you have no alternative clothing to change into as you are at work, then you can wash the affected area thrice and squeeze it, as that will purify it.
Thereafter, you can carry on reading Salah at work and not wait till you get home to change into clean clothes and read Qada.
Only Allah knows best.
