In the Friday prayer if someone is reading the sunnah and the khutba starts should he continue the salah?

In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful.

Answer

Firstly, if anyone arrives in the Masjid on the Day of Jummah and the Imam is delivering the khutbah then one should sit down and listen to the khutbah and pray the four rakaat sunnahs afterwards.

The Prophet of Allah Sallallahu Alahi Wasalam said: “When one of you enters the masjid whilst the Imam is on the pulpit (delivering the khutba) then he should not perform any Salah nor should he speak until the Imam completes (the sermon).” (Tabrani)
However, if someone started their sunnahs before the khutbah and they are on the first rakaat when the Azan for the khutbah takes place, then one should finish the Salah after the second rakaat. He will have to make up the four rakaat sunnahs afterwards. If one is on the third rakaat when the Azan starts, then one should continue and finish the four sunnahs.
