Is A 14-Karat Gold Fountain Pen Permissible To Use?

Question:

 

Is it permissible to use a fountain pen with a 14 karat gold nib? It has a tipping of iridium. So your hand is not touching the gold neither is the gold is not touching the paper.

 

 

 

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

 

Answer:

 

The instruction from the sunnah is that man are not allowed to wear gold. When it comes to utilizing items made of gold. The prohibition is both for man and woman.

 

This is to prevent a person from engaging in the luxuries of this world and neglect the command of Allah. In this way create love in the heart of a person and forgetting the hereafter.

 

When it comes to the fountain pen with a gold nib, the fuqaha have discussed specifically with regards to a pen and have deemed it to be impermissible. More so, 14 karat gold composes of 58.5% of the content of gold which is more than half of it.

 

Therefore it will be prohibited to use such a pen even if the hand is not touching the gold and the gold is not touching the paper.

وَفِي التَّهْذِيبِ لَا يَجُوزُ تَحْلِيَةُ سِكِّينِ الْقَلَمِ وَالْمَهْنَةِ وَالْمِقْرَاضِ وَالْمِقْلَمَةِ وَالدَّوَاةِ وَالْمِرْآةِ بِالذَّهَبِ وَهَلْ يَجُوزُ بِالْفِضَّةِ؟ فِيهِ وَجْهَانِ وَتَحْلِيَةُ السِّكِّينِ الَّذِي هُوَ لِلْحَرْبِ مُبَاحٌ وَتُكْرَهُ الْفِضَّةُ فِي الْمَكَاتِبِ فِي رِوَايَةِ أَبِي يُوسُفَ – رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى – خِلَافًا لَهُمَا، كَذَا فِي التُّمُرْتَاشِيِّ
