Question:

Is bilateral tubal ligation allowed in Islam?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Bilateral tubal ligation is method of permanent contraception for women. This is Haram and the Sharia is clear about this. Please see the Hadith below.

Narrated ‘Abdullah:

We used to participate in the holy battles led by Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and we had nothing (no wives) with us. So, we said, “Shall we get ourselves castrated?” He forbade us that and then allowed us to marry women with a temporary contract (2) and recited to us: — ‘O you who believe! Make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you but commit no transgression.’ ( Quran 5.87) (Sahih al-Bukhari 5075)

Islam will only permit this type of procedure if pregnancy will put a women’s life at harm. As at times of need the Sharia allows for the impermissible to become permissible.
