Question:

Is converting pictures to Ghibli art using AIs permissible? Please provide a Fatwa as this has become widespread. Jazaakumullaahu Khairaa

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer:

Ghibli art is essentially the conversion of digital photos into anime-style portraits through means of AI technology.

In our view, digital images are permissible due to them being pixelated and shadowless.[1] This is the view of many contemporary scholars worldwide, though you will find a group of scholars who uphold the view of impermissibility be it digital or otherwise.[2]

With that said, we are of the opinion that converting pictures to Ghibli art using AI technology is permissible.

Note, however, that the pictures taken, and as a result converted, must be within the dictates and parameters of what is lawful.
